On Friday April 12, Alpharetta police officer David Freeman was working his beat when he attempted to do a routine traffic stop.

Freeman pulled over Curtis Hicks, 52, for a vehicle tag violation. During the traffic stop, Hicks pulled out a gun and shot Freeman five times. Hicks then fled the scene in his car, heading down Highway 9 into Roswell. It was reported that Hicks continued to fire at policemen while he was fleeing. On State Route 400 in Sandy Springs, Hicks was evading arrest by fleeing from the police in a car chase. Eventually, Hicks was involved in a shootout with the police department that ultimately ended his life.

Griselda Cervantes, who lives in Woodstock, was also wounded during the high-speed chase. A bullet was fired through her car door and lodged itself in Cervantes back. It is unclear if she was shot by Hicks or by the police. Investigators will not know the answer to that unless the bullet is removed from her back.

Officer Freeman was taken to North Fulton Hospital and was thankfully released.

The police do not know why Hicks was resisting arrest, and are still investigating his motives. Although the gunman was killed during the pursuit, everybody is thankful that the innocent victims are safe. Reports indicate that Hicks was a loaner, and a missing person’s report from 2012 labeled Hicks as mentally unstable.

The Law Offices of Scott Miller hope that David Freeman and Griselda Cervantes make full recoveries from their injuries.
