IRS warns about telephone scams using IRS's name.
These scams are popular throughout the year, and especially during tax season.
You may receive a telephone call from an individual who says he is a representative of the IRS. You may be told that you owe a certain amount of money in back taxes, or that you are being charge with tax fraud. This person will urge you to make immediate payment, and may threaten you with arrest, if you do not pay immediately.  Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. The scammers may cite the last four numbers of your Social Security number.

The Internal Revenue Service does not initiate contact with individuals over the telephone or by email. The IRS does not ask for passwords or PINs, or other confidential access information.
The various governmental offices in the United States will not contact you by telephone or email, and demand that you pay money immediately and threaten you, if you do not do so.
