You are cruising along on a Georgia roadway. Maybe your mind is wandering to where you are going or what you need to get at the store. Suddenly, you see flashing lights in your rearview mirror. You immediately look at the speedometer. How fast were you going?

Your heart sinks as you realize you are well over the speed limit. You begin to panic when the law enforcement officer writes you a super speeder ticket. How will you deal with this? Here are some answers to questions you may have.

What is the “Super Speeder Law”?

The “Super Speeder Law” is one of the most costly driving offenses in Georgia. Also known as HB160, it went into effect on January 1, 2010, and greatly increased penalties for excessive speed. Entering its fourth year, the law was enacted to keep Georgia roadways safer by putting financial pressure on those ticketed. In general this law:

  • Applies to drivers convicted of driving 75 miles per hour or more on any two-lane road.
  • Applies to drivers convicted of driving over 85 miles per hour on any Georgia roadway.
  • Will cost those convicted a $200 fee—in addition to the fees in effect in the jurisdiction where the conviction occurs.
  • Will result in points against your license.

How many points could I get for a super speeder violation?

The Georgia point system is the same for all speeding convictions—super speeder or not. If you get 15 points in 24 months, your license will be suspended. Each offense carries a penalty between two to six points according to the breakdown listed below:

  • 2 points - 15-18 mph over speed limit
  • 3 points - 19-23 mph over speed limit
  • 4 points - 24-33 mph over speed limit
  • 6 points - 34 mph or more over speed limit
