When you complete the other penalties and requirements for a repeat Georgia DUI, you may be eligible to get an ignition interlock device (IID) installed, allowing you to return to normal activities behind the wheel of your own vehicle.

Sounds like a freedom you have really missed, huh? And it is. But you need to understand the costs and responsibilities required for you to get back on the road again.

The total costs of having a IID installed in Georgia are set by state law. Installation of the device will run you $155, and then you will pay a $75 monthly monitoring fee as long as you have it. Of course, this is in addition to the $210 license reinstatement fee you must pay to regain your driving privileges.

When you are ready and approved for IID installation, you will need to make some decisions. The Department of Driver Services (DDS) lists the approved Georgia IID providers on its website. There are quite a few, so you may want to check online reviews or your Better Business Bureau before selecting one.

You can learn more about the Georgia IID program rules and regulations, where to find installation centers, and get your questions answered at the DDS Ignition Interlock Program web page.

Of course, as an Alpharetta DUI defense attorney, I hope you never have to face the expense and stigma of the IID.
