People are always trying to come up with new ways to beat breathalyzers, or figure out how to drink at a party and still be able to safely drive home.

There are a lot of myths going around about drinking and DUIs in Georgia. Here is a list of the most common DUI-related myths:

  1. Coffee or a cold shower can help you sober up – False. People feel like they have sobered up after coffee or a cold shower because it wakes you up. In reality, you are becoming slightly more alert, but you are still drunk. The only way to stop being intoxicated is for alcohol to leave your system. The only that will happen is after a slow metabolic process that takes several hours to complete.
  2. Breath mints or mouthwash help you beat a breathalyzer test – False. Breathalyzers detect the amount of alcohol in your system, but not by the smell of your breath. Having fresh breath will not fool the breathalyzer. Police officers have said that when they smell breath mints on a driver’s breath they actually view it as an indication that they have been drinking and are trying to cover it up.
  3. You will have to recite the alphabet backwards – Not necessarily. People spend their time learning the alphabet backwards so if they were ever questioned during a sobriety check they would pass. For DUIs in Georgia officers will more commonly ask you to recite the alphabet without singing. Another test is to ask you to recite it with your eyes closed to see if you sway, open your eyes, or need the use of your arms for balance.
