They are severe consequences that are associated with a driving under the influence (DUI) conviction. If you have a second DUI offense in Georgia in a five year period, sometimes the court will order an ignition interlock device installed in your vehicle.

An ignition interlock device (IID) is a mechanism that is installed in your vehicle’s dashboard. It is the same idea as a breathalyzer. You breathe into the mechanism and it measures your blood alcohol content (BAC). If your BAC is over a predetermined limit set by the court, then your vehicle will not start.  Sometimes the device will require you to randomly give a test after you have been driving for a period of time; this is what is known as a “rolling test.”

The IID is usually installed after your license is reinstated. First you will have to pay the fees to have your license reinstated. Then you have to pay to have the IID installed in your vehicle. Depending on the complexity of your car, if it’s a luxury model or how long installation takes, you are looking at a cost of $50 to $200 to have the device installed. Then there are monthly rental fees for the device – this could cost you $50 to $100 a month. Your device will have to be checked every 60 days to make sure it is calibrated correctly and was not altered.  It is important that you take these maintenance checks seriously because not showing up for these appointments could result in suspension of your license.

As you can see, there are a lot of details that make having an IID annoying and costly. Your first attempt should be to hire an experienced Alpharetta attorney who may be able to get your case dismissed or have your consequences diminished.
