Georgia took Super Bowl XLVII seriously—especially when it came to reducing the number of DUI arrests and accidents. Joining the nationwide attempt to keep impaired drivers off the road February 3, 2013, there was more awareness this year than ever before.

One way officials worked to keep the roads safe was through a free smartphone application called “Drive Sober, Georgia.” This app provides lists of both free and paid sober rides for those who imbibe too much and do not wish to drive.

The app gives free information to both Apple and Android users. Contact information for sober rides is provided for ten Georgia cities. In addition, rural Super Bowl party fans get information for the AAA and Budweiser “Tow to Go” services.

Harris Blackwood, director of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) said, “We don’t think there’s ever an excuse to drive impaired in Georgia. But, with this app, we know there won’t be an excuse to drive impaired, because most Georgians will have access to a safe ride home in the palm of their hands.”

GOHS recognizes the increased danger of DUI-related traffic accidents during all holiday weekends, including Super Bowl Sunday. In 2010, drunk driving was the cause of almost a third of all fatal roadway accidents—weekends double the danger.

Director Blackwood urged all Georgia citizens to be safe, “Before you take that first sip of cold beer on February 3, take a minute to find a sober ride home. If you don’t have a plan to avoid driving drunk, you can rest assured that your local law enforcement agency will have a plan to take you to jail.”

The “Drive Sober, Georgia” smartphone app can be downloaded online at the Android and Apple websites at any time.
