Alpharetta attorney Scott Miller explains Georgia's Move Over Law.
In the year 2003, the Georgia legislature created a law to protect the safety of emergency personnel and workers whose vehicles are parked on the roadway shoulder.
This law is titled the Georgia Move Over Law, and it is intended to provide a buffer lane for emergency vehicles parked on a roadway shoulder. The move over law is present to ensure the safety of emergency personnel, and vehicle passengers. It requires that you the motorist, must move over one lane away from the emergency vehicle, thus providing A buffer between your vehicle and the emergency vehicle. If you are unable to safely move your vehicle to the adjacent lane you must slow your speed below the speed limit and be prepared to stop if necessary.
