The Internet is full of first-hand accounts written by people caught driving on a suspended Georgia driver’s license. While the law is clear on the penalties for driving on a suspended license, the actual outcomes of these stories are as individual as the people who wrote them.

One DeKalb County, Georgia, woman wrote about her husband, who was pulled over for failing to come to a complete stop at a stop sign. The routine license check revealed that his license had been suspended which she said was “a complete shock” to him.

He was released after two traumatic days in jail and a $1,000 fine. Apparently, a ticket he received and paid six years earlier had never been recorded as paid—resulting in the suspension. At the time she wrote, her husband’s court date was looming. They were advised to find a lawyer to avoid further jail time and fines.

Another man was arrested for driving on a suspended license in Chamblee, Georgia. He claimed his driver’s license had been suspended the day before—without his knowledge. After some considerable confusion, he discovered that the $250 speeding ticket he had received six months earlier, although paid, did not include the additional super speeder fine of $200. Because he had moved and not had his mail forwarded, he was unaware of the additional special Georgia speeding fee and never paid it. His question was, “Do I really need a lawyer?”
