Getting a traffic ticket really stinks, no matter what the charges, but when you are cited for “following too closely” in Georgia, there has most likely been an accident, and things can get more complicated very quickly.

As an Alpharetta traffic violation defense lawyer, I represent people who are facing this charge and help them make the best of a very bad situation. But, if it hasn’t happened to you yet, or if you want to avoid further problems in the future, here is some good advice for all drivers.

Seven Tips to Avoid a Georgia “Following Too Closely” Traffic Ticket

  • Be Vigilant! Watch not only the car directly in front of you, but also the two to four cars in front of you. Seeing the brakes light up on a car further down the road can give you more warning.
  • Follow the Three-Second Rule. Use a stationary object on the road (a tree, sign, etc.) to gauge your follow distance. When the vehicle in front of you passes the object, count slowly to three. If you pass it before finishing the count, you are too close.
  • Estimate! You should never follow another vehicle more than a car’s length for every ten feet between you. Similarly, you should allow a car’s length for every ten MPH of speed you are going—five lengths for 50 mph, six lengths for 60 mph, etc.
  • Allow for Road Conditions. In bad weather, when road conditions are iffy, double the three-second rule, and slow down—no matter what the posted speed limit.
  • At Intersections: Always stop in traffic far enough away from the car in front that you can see the full tire.
  • Be Aware of the No-Brainers: Use common sense all the time. For example, don’t ever follow a police car too closely!
  • Avoid Additional Charges: If you have some reason to believe that you could get in trouble for more than a following charge, play it smart. For example, if you are following a friend or family member home after drinking, be sure to stay a safe distance behind. Following too closely is a good initial reason for the officer to pull you over.
