If you have been ordered or chosen to take a Georgia Driver Improvement Course, you will be asked to spend six hours learning about how to be a better driver. Of course, the time you spend may be to your advantage if you:

  • Are ordered by a court to attend.
  • Can reduce points on your license.
  • Need to get your license reinstated.
  • Want to stabilize or reduce your insurance rates.

But in today’s fast-paced society, you may find it difficult to attend a classroom-based course. Can you take the course online, instead of at a Georgia DDS-approved facility? The answer depends entirely on several factors.

You may want to take an online Georgia driver improvement course if:

  • You received a ticket in a Georgia court that allows online instruction. Not every court does. In fact, at this time, courts in Georgia are not required to accept online instruction and completion certificates. Those that do may allow you to dismiss or downgrade the traffic ticket. You will have to contact the Court Clerk to find out.
  • You simply want to reduce your insurance rates. If you are at least 25 years of age and have a clean driving record over the past three years, Georgia law allows you to take a six-hour driver improvement course and receive a minimum 10% discount on your insurance. Be sure you check with your insurance company when signing up online to see if the course you have chosen is approved.

However, it is very important to understand that the Georgia Department of Driver Services DOES NOT accept online certificates of completion for Points Reduction or Driver’s License Restoration. You must pass a classroom-based class to do this.
