5th U.S. Circuit abolishes racial segregation in prisons
 
In 1974 the US fifth circuit court held, in the case Gates v. Collier,  inmates could not be segregated because of race, and any form of corporal punishment against prisoners are to be considered cruel and unusual punishment.
