A doctor in Atlanta was convicted on June 24, 2013, on 27 charges of health care fraud, tax fraud, and money laundering.

An Alanta Doctor, allegedly created a scheme where he provided no-cost travel accommodations (through his own fake charity) to entice patients from all over the country to be treated at his Atlanta medical clinic, said U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates.

Doctors take the Hippocratic Oath, and Medicare doctors take a special oath that says they won’t interfere with a patient’s ability to choose a doctor based on medical needs alone.  When Eppelbaum violated this oath to further make more money, Yates believes he, “has done harm to his future rights and liberties.”  Te Doctor was accused of providing patients with kickbacks by funneling money through an area Jewish day school to disguise his funding. This gave him federal tax deductions as well. He received approximately $16 million for treatment of patients from Medicare.

His healthcare charges each carry a maximum sentence of 10 years or five years in prison and a fine of $250,000. The tax charges carry up to five years in prison and a fine of $250,000. And his money laundering charges each carry a sentence of 20 years in prison and a fine of $500,000.
