There is a difference between driving with expired tags or no tags and driving with suspended, canceled, or revoked registrations. Driving with expired or no tags is a misdemeanor in Georgia and will go on your permanent driving record. Driving with suspended, canceled, or revoked registration in Georgia is a more serious and costly offense. For the purposes of this blog we will focus on the consequences of driving with expired or no tags in Georgia.

The fines vary from county to county in Georgia. In other words, there is not a statewide fine imposed for driving with expired tags. Here is a list of fines in Fulton County:

  • Expired tag (59 days or less) – $125
  • Expired tag (60 days or more) – $135
  • Improper display of tag – $135
  • Improper registration (failure to obtain Georgia tag) – $135
  • No county decal (first offense) – $30
  • No county decal (second offense) – $135
  • No tag – $135

If you’re lucky, you could get a lenient officer who writes you a “fix it ticket.” Since this would just be the luck of the draw I would not advise that you cross your fingers and hope you get pulled over by a nice police officer.

If you have been pulled over for driving with expired or no tags in Georgia you should contact the Law Office of Scott Miller. No one wants to have misdemeanors on a permanent record. It could cost you a job later in life when a potential employer does a background check and sees that you have a misdemeanor and your competitor for the job does not.
