Although some shoplifters are professionals who sell the goods to get money for food, or to supply their drug habit, most shoplifters are young, every day people, who steal because of impulse.
We have all heard of kleptomaniacs that cannot resist the urge to steal, but  they make up only a small portion of the total number of shoplifters.
The average shoplifter is a good kid, from a good home, who was caught doing a foolish thing.  Most shoplifters will admit that they wanted to see if they could get away with it.
